The Milan Duomo rooftop at a glance

The Milan Duomo rooftop is a walk between marble spires, buttresses and statues. The first level lies at about 31 m, and the upper central terrace at 45 m. The central terrace measures roughly 1,530 m². The route counts 251 steps. A lift takes you to the first level only, and the climb to the upper terrace is by stairs.

The roof is a separate visit from the church. A roof-only ticket does not include the cathedral or the museum, so decide first whether you want one or both. Prices are for 2026 and change from time to time.

Lift or stairs: which rooftop ticket

Adult and reduced prices for 2026.

TicketRouteAdultReduced
Rooftops StairsStairs all the way, roof only€16€8
Rooftops LiftLift to the first level, then stairs, roof only€18€9
Fast-Track Rooftops LiftPriority lift access, roof only€28€14
Combo StairsRoof by stairs, plus cathedral, museum and San Gottardo€22€11
Combo LiftRoof with the lift, plus cathedral, museum and San Gottardo€26€13

For most visitors, Combo Stairs at €22 is the better value: it costs €6 more than the roof alone and adds the church and the museum. Choose a lift ticket if the first long climb is hard for you. Fast Track is sold online only and seasonally, and it speeds up the lift queue, not the security check. See all products on the tickets page.

What you see on the roof

Terraces were part of the plan from the start.

The cathedral has 135 spires, about 150 gargoyles and over 3,400 statues. Flying buttresses carry the weight of the walls, and the terraces were planned as walkways in the original design. Close up, you see how many figures and carved details sit where nobody looks from the square.

The gilded Madonnina stands on the highest tower, about 108 m above the ground. She is made of gilded copper sheets and was put in place at the end of 1774. She is 4.16 m tall. The Madonnina is not an accessible viewpoint, so you see her from below. For the history and numbers, read our facts page, and for the style of the building, the architecture page.

The view across Milan is wide. The mountains around the Po plain show only on clear days, and no ticket promises an Alpine view or a sunset from every time slot.

Steps, weather and facilities

Plan the practical side before you queue.

The way down is by stairs

The regular descent is by stairs only, even with a lift ticket. If you have special mobility needs, ask staff before you buy. A fully step-free roof visit is not offered.

Narrow and uneven paths

Expect narrow spots, steep, uneven and slippery stretches, and some stairs without handrails. Wear comfortable shoes with grip.

No toilets on the terraces

There are no visitor toilets on the roof. Plan a stop before you go up.

Weather can interrupt a visit

Bad weather can pause roof visits for safety. There is no fixed wind or storm limit. A partly closed terrace does not mean an automatic refund.

Hours

The terraces are open daily from 09:00 to 19:00, with last entry at 18:00 and a weather caveat. In 2026 the roof stayed open until 20:00 on selected extra days in spring and on Fridays to Sundays from 5 June to 13 September. Extended hours are not a fixed yearly rule, so see the opening hours page.

Duomo rooftop: frequently asked questions

How many steps are there to the Duomo roof?

The route counts 251 steps. The lift covers the way to the first level, and the rest of the climb is by stairs.

Is the roof included in the cathedral ticket?

No. The €10 cathedral, museum and San Gottardo ticket has no roof access. Add a roof-only ticket or choose a Combo.

Can I take the lift down?

No guarantee. The regular route down is by stairs only, and a lift ticket does not give a right to a lift descent.

Can you reach the Madonnina?

No. The golden statue stands on the main tower and is not a viewpoint. The highest visitor level is the upper central terrace at 45 m.

What is the best time for the rooftop?

Clear weather gives the widest view, and the last entry is at 18:00. For seasons and crowds, see the best time page.
