Things to do near Milan Duomo

The Duomo stands on the Piazza del Duomo, and most of what is worth a visit in the old centre lies within a short walk. The list below has 12 ideas: museums on the square, the Galleria, a few churches, La Scala and two larger sights in the wider centre, Castello Sforzesco and Brera. Some belong to the same complex. The Highline sits on the Galleria, and San Gottardo is part of the Duomo Museum ticket, so they are separate things to see but not twelve separate monuments.

Treat it as a menu, not a one-day route. If you have not yet planned the cathedral itself, start with the Milan Duomo tickets and the opening hours.

On and beside the square

Ideas 1 to 4, all within the first minutes of the cathedral.

1. Palazzo Reale

The former royal palace at Piazza Duomo 12 hosts changing exhibitions, and the price depends on the exhibition. It is closed on Mondays and otherwise open 10:00 to 19:30, on Thursdays until 22:30, with last entry one hour before closing. From Duomo metro station it is about 250 m, roughly 4 minutes at a walking pace of 4 km/h. The Duomo Museum is in its ground floor, see the Duomo Museum.

2. Museo del Novecento

Twentieth-century Italian art at Piazza Duomo 8. A ticket costs €10, reduced €5. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 19:30, Thursday until 22:30, closed on Monday. It is also about 250 m from the metro, roughly 4 minutes on foot.

3. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The glass-roofed arcade links the Piazza del Duomo with the Piazza della Scala. Look at the floor mosaics and the architecture by Giuseppe Mengoni. Turning on the heel on the bull mosaic is a custom for luck, nothing more. History and shops are on the Galleria page.

4. Highline Milano

A separate walkway and exhibition space on the roof of the Galleria, entered at Galleria 11/12. The full price is €15. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 with last entry 17:30, and closed on Mondays. It has its own ticket and is not part of a Duomo roof ticket. The route has stairs and narrow, raised paths, so it is not fully wheelchair accessible.

Our pick: the centre by bike

Our take: three hours by bike covers the sights around the Duomo and beyond.

Squares, churches and a theatre

Ideas 5 to 8, a little further into the old centre.

5. Piazza Mercanti

A small historic square reached through arcades and Via Mengoni from the cathedral square. It is part of the classic walk from the cathedral square. There is nothing to book, and it makes a calm stop after the crowds at the Duomo.

6. Santa Maria presso San Satiro

Free to enter, on Via Torino. Bramante built a false choir only 97 cm deep that looks like 9.70 m. Typical hours are Monday to Friday 07:30 to 18:00, Saturday 15:30 to 19:00, and Sunday and feast days 09:30 to 12:00 and 15:30 to 19:00. It is a working church, so services come first.

7. Museo Teatrale alla Scala

The museum next to the opera house costs €12, reduced €8, free under 6 years. It is open 09:30 to 17:30 with last entry 17:00. An online booking can carry an extra fee. The theatre entrance is at Via Filodrammatici 2, about 300 m from Duomo metro station, roughly 5 minutes, and the museum entrance can differ. A look into the auditorium from a box is possible only when there is no rehearsal, performance or public event. The museum ticket is not an opera ticket. Closing days include 7, 25 and 26 December, 1 January, Easter, 1 May and 15 August.

8. Castello Sforzesco

The castle courtyards are free and open daily 07:00 to 19:30. The museums cost €10, reduced €5, and are open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:30, closed on Monday. Plan it as a separate outing in the wider centre rather than a stop on the way from the Duomo.

Castello Sforzesco with its main tower

Art, a chapel and an ossuary

Ideas 9 to 12, mostly for people who want more than the headline sights.

9. Pinacoteca di Brera

The Brera district's picture gallery at Via Brera 28. La Grande Brera costs €20, with a €4 reduced rate for a specific age group, and under 18s enter free with a reservation. The ticket also covers Palazzo Citterio on the day of the visit and the six days after.

10. Pinacoteca Ambrosiana

At Piazza Pio XI 2, a ticket costs €17, or €20 with the San Sepolcro crypt. It is open 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Wednesdays, and the ticket office currently closes at 17:15. A combined Duomo and Ambrosiana ticket also exists, see the ticket guide.

11. San Gottardo in Corte

The former palace chapel of Azzone Visconti, built in 1336, with his tomb and a bell tower in Lombard Gothic terracotta. It is included in the Duomo Museum ticket and closed on Wednesdays, like the museum.

12. San Bernardino alle Ossa

A church and ossuary on Piazza Santo Stefano, free to enter. It is open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 09:30 to 18:00. On Sundays the church opens 09:30 to 12:00 and the ossuary stays closed.
