How to get to Milan Duomo

The easiest way to get to Milan Duomo is the metro. The station is called Duomo, it serves lines M1 (red) and M3 (yellow), and it opens onto the Piazza del Duomo. From Milano Centrale take M3, the direct line. From Cadorna take M1. The total journey time depends on your timetable and transfers.

Once you are on the square, the cathedral entrance, the ticket offices and the Galleria are all in sight. If you have not yet chosen a visit type, compare the Milan Duomo tickets first and book your time slot, then plan the journey around it.

Metro and tram

The city network is run by ATM, and one ticket works across metro, tram and bus.

Metro M1 and M3

Both lines stop at Duomo. M3 links the station with Centrale, and M1 links it with Cadorna, which is also the stop for Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Last Supper (M1 Cadorna or Conciliazione). If you plan both on one day, read the Duomo and Last Supper guide.

Tram lines

Lines 1, 2, 3, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 19 serve the area around the cathedral. Line 1 stops at Via Grossi, the others at Duomo M1 M3, line 27 at Piazza Fontana and line 24 at Missori. The stops are spread around the centre and not all of them are at the cathedral front, so check your stop and any detours before you ride.

By foot

The old centre is compact. From Piazza Fontana or Missori the cathedral is a short walk, and the Galleria leads from the square to La Scala. See what is near the Duomo for the closest sights.

Our pick: the hop-on bus

Our take: four lines link the station, the castle and the Duomo area.

For most visitors the single ticket is enough for one cathedral trip. A day ticket pays off when you plan three or more rides, for example Duomo, Cadorna and back.

From the airports to the Duomo

The times below are for the rail or bus leg, not the whole trip to the cathedral door.

AirportHow to goJourney and fare
MalpensaMalpensa Express to Cadorna or Centrale, then M1 or M3 to DuomoAbout 37 minutes to Cadorna, about 51 minutes to Centrale. €15 adult, €7.50 for ages 4 to 13
LinateM4 to San Babila, then M1 to Duomo, or walkAbout 12 minutes from the airport to the centre. Standard €2.20 fare
Bergamo (Orio al Serio)Orio Shuttle bus to Milano Centrale, then M3 to DuomoAbout 50 to 60 minutes by bus depending on traffic. €12 single, €10 online

Check the Malpensa Express price on the ticket machine. The Malpensa Express fare is separate from the city ticket. At Linate you can change from M4 to M1 on the same ticket. The bus prices for Bergamo are the standard single and the online offer, and the lowest advertised price is not always available. If you land in Bergamo and want to see the town, the Bergamo guide has the details.

For most visitors from Malpensa, the Express to Cadorna plus M1 is the simplest route, because it ends at the same line as the Last Supper stop.

Driving to the Duomo

Not recommended for the centre, but here are the facts.

Area C

The city centre has a traffic-restricted zone called Area C. It is regulated Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30, public holidays excluded. The general fee is €7.50. Paying it does not allow entry to additional pedestrian zones or other restricted areas. Check the current fee and whether your vehicle may enter before you drive in.

Park and ride

At car parks such as Lampugnano and Bisceglie you leave the car and take the metro. The parking fee is separate from the metro ticket. Examples for 2026: up to 5 hours €1.50, 5 to 10 hours €2, 10 to 15 hours €2.50, 15 to 19 hours €4, 19 to 24 hours €7.50. Special events can change the rate, and a free space is not guaranteed.
