The best time to visit Milan for the Duomo
There is no closed season. The cathedral is open every day, and the weather decides more about your day than the calendar does. The best time to visit Milan is a weighing of climate: late spring and September give milder days than July, while winter is cool and summer is hot. Rain falls in every month, and October averages the most.
The weather matters most on the roof. If you plan to climb, look at the Milan Duomo rooftop tickets and choose a day with clear sky, because the terraces give mountain views only when it is clear. The figures below are long-term monthly averages and do not replace a forecast.

Season by season
What the averages mean for a cathedral visit.
March to May
Highs rise from 14.3 °C in March to 22.3 °C in May, comfortable for the roof walk. May is also one of the wetter months at 95.5 mm, so take a light rain jacket.
June to August
July is the warmest month with a 29.2 °C average high. The marble roof has little shade, so wear a hat outdoors and use sun protection. Food and drink are not allowed on the roof, except water and medicines, and there are no visitor toilets there.
September and October
September still averages 24.4 °C and then cools quickly. October is the wettest month at 122.4 mm, which suits the indoor sights, the museum and the cathedral nave better than the roof.
November to February
Days are cool, with highs between 5.9 and 10.7 °C and lows near freezing in December to February. February is the driest month on average at 49.2 mm. The cathedral keeps its daily hours, but dress warmly for the stone interior and the roof.
Weather and the rooftop terraces
What to expect on the day.
Bad weather can pause visits
The operator can interrupt roof visits for safety in bad weather and there is no fixed wind or storm limit. Check the sky and the forecast on the day. A partly closed terrace does not by itself give an automatic refund, so read your ticket terms.
Views need clear air
The mountains around the Po plain are visible only on clear days. A sunset view cannot be guaranteed for any time slot.
Longer hours on some days
The terraces normally open daily 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:00. On selected spring and summer days they stay open until 20:00, and the dates are set each season. Look at the opening hours before you plan an evening visit.
Timing beyond the weather
Days of the week and the month matter too.
Crowds
No month is empty, so book your time slot in any season rather than hoping for a quiet day. Your slot sets the time you can enter.
Free museum Sunday
Since 27 September 2026 the Duomo Museum is free on the last Sunday of the month with a reservation. Reservations open from the Tuesday before, up to 2 tickets per booking. This covers the museum only, not the terraces. See the museum guide.
Closed days
The Duomo Museum and San Gottardo are closed on Wednesdays, and on that day a cathedral-only ticket costs €8. Leonardo's Last Supper is closed on Mondays, so a Duomo and Last Supper day does not work then. Tickets for it need to be booked well ahead, and free places are never certain.
